This point is called Zu San Li in Chinese, meaning ‘leg 3 miles’ – the curious name gives a clue as to the energy boosting properties of the point. It is said that in ancient China, soldiers would press and rub this point on their leg in order to strengthen their energy levels so that they could go on and march another 3 miles. In Japan, it has long been a long lasting tradition to burn moxa on the S36 point, a practice believed to promote good health and longevity. This custom continues among older generations and there is a famous tale of a farmer named Manbei, who lived to be 242 years old. It's said that his secret to a long, healthy life was burning moxabustion on this point every day.

Location
S36 is located four finger widths down from the bottom of your knee cap, along the outer boundary of your shin bone. If you are in the right place, a muscle should pop out as you move your foot up and down.

- On the tibialis anterior muscle
- About four finger-widths below the kneecap
- About two finger-widths from the front of the shinbone, toward the outside of the lower leg
